Yesterday

Yesterday,

I wandered lonely hillsides in the rain

In search of morning sunshine

I saw a hawk fly through the rain clouds.

It landed in the hickory tree.

Brother sun tried to come out of hiding,

But the rain clouds chased him away.

I remember once I saw you standing

On the hillside in the rain.

Your hair was wet,

It framed your face with dagger points

And drops of sweet fresh rain.

The sun tried to shine that day, too

I saw a rainbow in your eyes.

But maybe only lovers see rainbows

Where they shouldn't be.

Do you remember walking barefoot

Through the stream,

The gold and silver fishes

Brushing against our toes?

I could have sworn

You were a gypsy king.

I saw it in your eyes

Along with warm familiar love.
