Adult Size Booties

Yarn - 4ply. Do not use baby yarn or rug yarn.

Hook - I use the G. I tried the H but the stitches were too loose and the bootie itself was much bigger than the exact same stitch count using the G.

The Sole

Begin with a chain of 24.

Row One

Double Crochet in the 4th stitch from the end. Counting the 3 stitch chain as one continue until you have a total of 5 stitches in that one loop.

Continue doing Double Crochet stitches one in each loop until you reach the last loop. Do 5 Double Crochets in that stitch and continue up the other side of the chain.

Reaching the end once again, stop and count each Double Crochet including the initial chain. If you have 48 stitches now you have done the first row. If not and you are one stitch less you can add one there. I find it easier for me just to go back and start over until the count is right. If you have over 48 it will look better and cause you less problems if you pull it out and start over.

If this first row is done right, the rest will be a lot easier.

Row Two

For the sole and for the first 5 rows of the foot part, I work the stitches through both loops of a stitch but still only one stitch. Later we will need to work them only through the inside loop leaving a line easily visible.

Chain 3 and work 2 DC in the next 3 loops then continue till you are at the point where you made the 5 DC. Here you will need to determine the center stitch and do 2 DC in the 3 center stitches. Then continue with DC in each loop till the end. You should have 54 stitches.

Row Three

Chain 3 and do one DC in the next loop. Then do 2 DC in the next loop, 1 DC in the next loop, 2 DC in the next loop, 1 DC in the next loop and 2 DC in the next loop. Then do 1 DC in each loop till you reach that same point at the other end of the sole. Repeat the same pattern so the two ends of the sole look the same. After you join the two ends of the row together draw a loop through it and tie it off leaving a loop and string about an inch long. The sole is finished now. You can either make the other sole now or begin the foot. You should have a total of 60 stitches in this row.

Note: The size of the foot the bootie is for may be a longer or shorter foot in which case you will have to experiment with the original chain length till you find the size that works best.
