Old-Fashioned Cranberry-Apple Steamed Pudding

2 tablespoons shortening
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 tablespoons grated fresh orange rind
3/4 cup unsifted all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup milk
1/2 cup finely chopped, pared cooking apple
1 cup whole fresh cranberries
Cream shortening and sugars. Beat in egg, molasses and orange rind. Mix flour, baking powder, soda, ginger and cinnamon. Blend into creamed mixture with milk. Fold in apple and cranberries. Turn into a well-greased and floured 5 or 6 cup mold. Spread evenly. Top with a tight fitting lid, or foil tied tightly with string. Set on a rack in a large pan. Add water to 3/4 the depth of the mold. Cover and steam for 2 1/2 hours. Cool a few minutes, turn out of the mold and serve warm with Hard Sauce, if desired. Makes 8 servings.
Hard Sauce
1/2 cup soft butter or margarine
1 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Cream butter; beat in confectioners' sugar, lemon rind and juice. Chill
