Take This Wheel

Peggy Eyres

The rain clouds my windshield and the road winds on and on

I wonder if I'll see my bed before I see the dawn

I follow the taillights of a van from way out west

And I feel like a bird that has fallen from its nest.

Dear Lord, take this wheel 'cause I can't make it alone

Once more let me feel the comfort of home

Dear Lord, take this wheel, take these poor tired bones

Shine a light, 'cause I know I can't make it on my own.

You know I get restless and I long for the stage

This little town I bump around starts feeling like a cage

But when the show is over and there's no one left to hear

Then I wish these miles between us could just somehow disappear.

Sometimes the voice is quiet that calls me down the road

Other times it weighs upon me like a heavy load

And I know someone is waiting for the message that I bring

And I know the miles are worth it when I sing.
