I never thought it meant much except to be an unusual sign saying 4 1/2 miles to Fort Ann with a black guy dressed up pointing the way.

Yes, we grew up calling it "The Nigger Sign Board." We were not racist then and we aren't today. It's just a word. It's a word that most older folks have used and heard a lot in our lives. I am part Native American. If you call me "Indian" or even "savage" I won't throw a hissy fit and sue you. I might get offended at the "savage" word but in the end it's still just a word.

Our dad often spoke of "nigger rigging". He was not making fun of black people. In truth, he was praising them for knowing ways to fix things without having the proper pieces to fix them with. When a man or even a woman of any color, could fix something that was broken without having to spend big bucks, that person deserved praise.

By today's politically correct standards I will be called racist for even posting this article but it is the truth and so it's here.

Our Dad often sat at the kitchen table taking things apart, whether it was a car part, a well pump, a chain saw or whatever, he would do his best to make it work and more often than not he succeeded. Both Dad and Mom grew up in times where you "made do or did without."

That ninja turtle means this was taken probably by Tommy when we went to visit Grandma. He had a camera that put that image on each photo.
