Grandma Russell's house on Frank Street in Fort
Edward.
We moved sometime after that to an apartment that was owned by Grandma Russell.
I also thought she owned it but now thinking back I don't think she owned
anything but the one little house she lived in all the time I remember her. It
was somewhere in Fort Edward on the ground floor. I know she had something to do
with this place. I also have a vague memory that it may have been about to be
torn down for some reason and we were only allowed to stay there a short time.
It had a big porch that was all loosely covered with
rotting boards.
The only memories I have of this place were first that Dad hated taking anything
from Grandma Russell and also I experienced the first traumatic event of my
childhood there.
One night we were returning from somewhere in the dark. As we turned onto the
street we lived on I saw my kitten squashed in the road. I cried for hours until
exhausted I fell asleep.
People tell you it will be better in the morning and that you will eventually
find it easier to think about. When I look back on that time I can still feel
the horror of that night. I can't recall the cat or even its name but the horror
is still there. Some things hurt so badly that the memory of the pain is burned
into your soul.
I went to a school there but only for about a month before we moved again. This
must be in the wrong place or I'm thinking wrong here.
Sue thinks it was on McCrea Street. It may have been. She lived with Mom and Dad a lot longer than the rest of us. Like most older folks the stories were told over and over. Mom also wrote continuously in her journals once she began them. I think she started writing them in Kingsbury but that's only because I thought I saw her writing there once. It would have made an impression on me as I was writing my own at the time. This may have been where we went to McDonald school. I can't find anything online about it.
We may have gone to the school that used to be behind the Hudson Falls Free Library here but I think I'm missing a house here.
